14 (now 18) alternatives and additions to basecamp.
I was looking around for some alternatives to Basecamp, and was pretty surprised to see that there are a ton of alternatives out there. So naturally a list is the way forward.
No recommendations yet, and not all of these are Basecamp replacments – Harvest and ClockingIt, for example, could be seen as complimentary.
- Goplan
- Unfuddle
- OnStage
- Harvest (time tracking and invoicing)
- TeamWorkLive
- ActionThis
- 5pm
- DeskAway
- Collabtrak
- ActiveCollab (self hosted)
- ProjectPier (fork of older version of ActiveCollab, selfhosted, opensource)
- ClockingIt (timetracking, opensource)
- Lighthouse
- Copper
- Wrike
- Intervals
- Central Desktop
- Huddle

If you need to send project summaries or project wrap-ups to clients from Basecamp, check out http://www.exportreports.com.
Its a new service, currently in beta which allows you to export reports from Basecamp to PDF(with beta pricing starting at $0.99 per report).
Hope you find it useful (and if you have any suggestions, please let us know!).

One more for your list: Intervals. It is a web-based project management service that is somewhere between Harvest and Wrike. Focusing on time and task tracking, it also handles documents, light invoicing, and reports.

And another - CentralDesktop is great. Have been using them for over a year.

Collaboration tools are like mobile phones, lots of different options and every group has different needs. For those working with less sophisticated groups of users (i.e. non-techies), check out ProjectSpaces. It is yet another great basecamp alternative that focuses on usability and caters to less tech savvy users.

Are there any alternatives that combine social enterprise micro-blogging (i.e. yammer.com or coopapp.com)?
Thanks!
anu
@Jason.
I wasn't aware of any, but I did a quick bit of searching, and came across 2 possibilities. Unfortunately both are still in invite-only phase.

Producteev
I've requested invites, and will update this post as and when I get more information.

@jason
Indeed, Producteev might be what you're looking for, since we definitely surf on the social web trends (twitter, facebook...) mixed with a sophisticated yet simple task management web-app for teams/groups.
@anu got the request, I'll make sure you receive a code within the next 10 days! we're almost ready.

Hey, don't forget us :D - Teamwork Project Manager (www.teamworkpm.net).

Hi everybody,
In the list above I cannot find http://www.twproject.com/" title="Teamwork"> Teamwork , so I’ve thought to suggest it to you. We’ve been using it since one year It’s a really complete software.
Ilia
Just checked all of thouse.
Only Teamworklive and Intervals provide the feature when you create task and the assignee cannot close the task himself and have to send it back to the assigner. So assigner can be is absolutely sure that he checked the if the assignee has done exactly what requested.
I personally have no idea how to live without this feature. I send back for more elaboration at least 20% of all tasks I create, sometimes because performer did not do well, or because I explained not quite well.
Finally, based on the pricing I chose Intervals. I am the second day there, put real data, and the more I use the more I like it.
However the only problem is that I find it slower then others. The AJAX interface is not throughout all the intefrace of the tool.
So the interface is not as "cool" as others like 5pm, for example. But its OK for me.

Jason, at LiquidPlanner we have twitter-like communication built in.

You may want to look at Action Method.
It is another option that you can find at Actionmethod.com

Basecamp is at the top right now because of its simplicity but alternatives always give a new era in the current working mode and some alternative may be future best. 37signals has had an almost religiously held notion of “less software” which in many ways it is a brilliant philosophy and the actual thing is that Basecamp add-ons are typically an additional cost on top of the monthly fee for Basecamp, are usually not as well-integrated as native features would be and they come with the risk of being discontinued as was ExtraReports, the reporting add-on for Basecamp. But for the alternatives the thing is that every alternative is running for providing new and complex features which are not even useful for evry1 but to showcase them they forget the real story. Huddle is one of the aternatives i liked activecollab also provides good service but the payment option of $249 and $399 makes you think a 100 times before paying.
WE actually want a system which provides simplicity as basecamp provides and features that just don't prove to be additional weight on the product rather would prove to be actually useful. I heard of a product called Proofhub from a friend of mine though i couldnt find much on the internet but what i came to know was that the product provides some really good features with simplicity and at much cheaper price. Lets hope for the best and maybe we get a better product soon. Thnx for the post Anu

Nice list, Anu!
Check out the just released Zoho Projects 2.0. Sports a new UI and as some commenters has wanted, it provides a Twitter-like project message stream. Has an integrated chat and wiki too.

Now there's www.glasscubes.com too - offering CRM as well as all the usual tools.

Glasnost21 is different in four ways:
First, it is specifically designed for collaboration outside the firewall, with clients and suppliers as well as colleagues.
Secondly, as an Adobe Flex application it provides an exceptional user experience and makes information remarkably accessible.
Thirdly a dedicated Image Management module means vastly superior handling of digital assets.
And lastly, the Contact Management Module provides ‘lite’ but powerful CRM functionality as well as email campaign management.
